**In short:** a WooCommerce bundle shouldn’t have its own stock count. In the free [Nanflows Bundles](https://wordpress.org/plugins/nanflows-bundle/) plugin, a bundle can only be sold while every product inside is in stock, overselling is checked at add to cart, in the cart and at checkout, and stock comes off (and goes back to) the real products inside.

The quickest way to make a bundle in WooCommerce is to create a new product called “Starter Kit”, give it a price, and set its stock to 20. It works until the day you sell your last tea towel as a single item, while the Starter Kit page still says 20 in stock.

That’s the problem with a bundle that has its own stock count: it has no idea what’s actually on your shelves. This post explains how [Nanflows Bundles](https://wordpress.org/plugins/nanflows-bundle/) handles stock instead, in the free version.

## A bundle has no stock of its own

A bundle is a set of real products, and its stock is theirs:

- **A bundle is available while every product in it is in stock.**
- **The product with the least stock decides how many bundles can be sold,** for the quantity the bundle needs. A kit needs 2 candles and you have 9? You can sell 4 kits, as far as the candles are concerned.
- **Each sale takes stock from the products inside,** not from a separate bundle count.

![Candles, towels and notebooks in stock, and the four kits they allow](https://nanflows.com/img/blog/woo-stock.svg)
*Two candles a kit and nine in stock: the candles decide that 4 kits can be sold.*

So the tea towel you sold on its own also reduces the number of starter kits you can sell. Nobody has to keep two numbers in sync.

## Overselling is stopped three times

Two people can add the last kit to their carts at the same moment. So stock is checked:

1. **At add to cart.**
2. **In the cart,** in case stock changed while it sat there.
3. **At checkout,** before the order is placed.

## When stock comes off, and when it goes back

Stock is taken from the products inside **when the order is paid,** and put back on a **cancellation** or a **restocking refund.** WooCommerce does this itself, as it would for those products sold one by one. Your stock reports keep working, because the stock moves on real products.

## Variable products

If the shopper picks a size or colour, it’s that variation’s stock that counts. Sold-out options show as out of stock and can’t be chosen.

## Bundles where the shopper picks

In the Pro types where shoppers choose ([mix and match](https://nanflows.com/blog/woocommerce-mix-and-match-products), [build your own](https://nanflows.com/blog/woocommerce-build-your-own-bundle), [gift boxes](https://nanflows.com/blog/woocommerce-gift-box-builder), [variety packs](https://nanflows.com/blog/woocommerce-variety-pack)), each picked product uses its own stock. A sold-out flavour simply can’t be picked, and the box can still be filled from the rest.

## In the order

Each bundle becomes order lines like any other: the bundle line, and a line for each product in it, marked with a visible “Part of bundle” note. Whoever packs the order sees exactly what to pick, and reports still count each product.

*The order: the bundle, then each product marked “Part of bundle”.*

## Downloads and virtual products

Virtual and downloadable products can go in a bundle. Customers get their downloads as usual, and there’s no stock to worry about for them.

## FAQ

### Can I set a separate stock limit for the bundle?

No, and that’s on purpose. The bundle’s availability always comes from its products. If you want to limit how many bundles one customer takes, Pro has a maximum number of bundles per order.

### What if a product inside the bundle is set not to manage stock?

Then it never runs out, and only the other products limit the bundle.

### Does this work with the block checkout?

Yes. Stock is checked in the classic cart and checkout and in the Cart and Checkout blocks.
